Twitter launches official Mac client

Social networking site Twitter has launched an official Mac client via the Mac App Store. Based on an earlier independent app called Tweetie for Mac, the new title is said to be up to three times faster. Like some other Twitter clients the software updates in real-time, and automatically shortens URLs when composing posts. Keyboard shortcuts simplify some actions.
Twitter bought the developer of Tweetie for Mac, atebits, in April 2010. The acquisition was made for the sake of developing an official Twitter iPhone app, and sidelined Tweetie 2 indefinitely. A native iPad app was in fact completed in the interim.

Disney has delivered 1 million iOS book apps

Parents must be finding it easier than ever to keep kids in the backseat distracted -- Disney Publishing has hit 1 million downloads of its Disney Book Apps for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

Disney Publishing has nine book apps in the App Store, all of which have been seen in the top 10 paid book apps since the iPad debuted in April. Four of the apps are currently listed in the Top 10 in the iTunes App Store Books category, with Toy Story Read-Along in the Top 5 Book Apps in 35 countries.

The highly rated Toy Story Read-Along app lets kids hear the story read aloud or follow the story at their own pace, interspersed with movie clips, finger-painting, sing-along songs, and interactive games. Kids or parents can even record their own voice narrating and hear it read back.

In Toy Story Read-Along reviews, CanadiensFan1 writes:

"This app was such a delightful surprise, full of color, audio, songs and movie clips! It's easy to follow with a great voice that reads to you, easy to flip pages, and a true delight that really engages the reader and keeps you entertained. There are lots of little extras, including coloring pages and songs with lyrics to read-a-long, and you can touch some of the pictures on the page to get an audio clip from the movie. FUN!!!! If you loved the movie, this is a sweet and sophisticated application that is certainly as good as it gets for a book app, and it's free! Love Toy Story!!"

Based on Disney/Pixar's Cars, the Lightning Was Here: My Puzzle Book app lets kids cruise through Radiator Springs, completing puzzles and collecting sticker decals along the way, and is a favorite among friends' kids.

First look: Apple's Mac App Store simplifies buying, updating software

Apple's new Mac App Store will be instantly familiar to anyone who has used an iOS device, bringing the same look, feel, features and convenience to Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

The Mac App Store was released Thursday morning as a part of the Mac OS X 10.6.6 update for Snow Leopard. Upon applying the update and restarting their Mac, users will find the App Store icon in their dock.

The storefront looks and feels just like its iOS counterparts, with a "Featured" section that greets users when it is first launched. From here, a variety of software options in multiple categories are highlighted by Apple.

The Mac App Store will be instantly familiar to iOS users, with essentially the same layout, including lists available for the top paid, free and grossing applications. The same sections are presented with identical icons, like "Featured," "Top Charts" and "Updates," with one new option: "Purchases." And software is available in the same categories, including "Business," "Games," and "Music."

The App Store serves as a place not only to find new software, but also to manage applications and be notified of updates. Some of Apple's own applications, like the iLife '11 suite, were immediately identified as already installed by the Mac App Store. But on at least one machine, the Work '09 suite of Pages, Numbers and Keynote displayed the option to buy for $19.99 each, even though they were already on the system.

Also, strangely, Apple has highlighted its iWork suite in the Mac App Store, calling it "new," even though the only version available is iWork '09. Last November,AppleInsider reported that Apple has apparently completed development of iWork '11, but the company chose to hold off on releasing it until the Mac App Store opened for business.

In addition, free third-party applications already installed from outside the new App Store are not recognized, but they can be reinstalled with the new storefront. Rather than leaving users two copies of the free software on their Mac, the App Store installation process simply reinstalls the application, but gives it the benefits of the App Store, including licensing associated with an Apple ID and notifications for updates.

There is not currently a way to have the App Store recognize previously installed, paid third-party software, as this would leave Apple out of its 30 percent cut of all App Store sales. That means users who want the convenience of the App Store will need to buy the software again.

Before users can download anything from the store, they must first agree to new iTunes terms and conditions, updated to reflect the availability of the Mac App Store. After a purchase is made and the download initiated, its icon shows up on the dock, and a progress bar is displayed below it on the dock. Here again, the installation process looks and feels much like installing software on an iOS device.

Even the applications themselves will be familiar to iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users. Many of the same popular game titles have already come to Mac among the first thousand App Store options, including "Angry Birds," "Flight Control HD" and "The Incident."

Like with iTunes, users can obtain a link to a specific application and share it with friends. But browsing the Mac App Store in its own application does seem strange, given that iOS App Store purchases can only be made on Mac OS X through iTunes, where users also manage and sync their iPhone and iPad.

The release of the Mac App Store is Apple's first major step toward bringing features from the popular iOS to the Mac platform. Though the App Store is available for Snow Leopard through an update, it will be an integral part of Apple's next major operating system upgrade, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, due out this summer.

Apple gave a glimpse of Lion at a media event it held last October, noting that it would bring multi-touch gestures, App Home screens and full-screen apps from iOS to its desktop operating system. Also like iOS, applications will have the ability to automatically save, and to resume where they left off when they are relaunched.

Google launches Motorola Xoom as rival to Apple iPad

Google has launched its first tablet computer, marking the opening skirmishes in its battle with Apple’s popular iPad.
The Motorola Xoom is the first device to feature the new operating system – known as "Honeycomb" – that Google has designed for touch-screen tablets.
The device, like the iPad, features a 10” screen which is completely touch sensitive.
It will go on sale in the first quarter of next year in America and follow shortly afterwards in Britain. Prices have not yet been disclosed.
Although full details of Honeycomb were not revealed during the unveiling at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, it features a new maps programme that offers a full 3D look at major cities.
It also offers an email service that exploits the gadget's large tablet screen.
Google has previously allowed Samsung to make a smaller, 7” tablet, but the device used the same operating system as Google phones.
Shawn DuBravak, chief economist at the American Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), said he expected more than 100 new tablet computers to be launched at CES.
He added that 2011 would be “the year of the tablet”, but that not all the products unveiled at the show would actually make it to market. Mr Dubravac said a number of new products were struggling to provide users an businesses with specific reasons to buy them.
Research from the CEA indicated that 38 per cent of tablets were purchased because users wanted to own one, rather than for an identified purpose.
Although Apple makes all its software and hardware, Google has taken an "open source" approach by developing an operating system called which it allows manufacturers to put on their own devices – like the Motorola Xoom.
* Samsung has also unveiled a prototype full colour, touch sensitive display screen that can be rolled up. At 0.3mm thick, the screen could be used on clothing and mobile phones, although it is thought to be five years from mainstream production.

The store opening came before 9 a.m. Eastern time on Thursday, more than three hours earlier than was reported in a rumor on Wednesday. Apple had already announced in December that the Mac App Store would launch Jan. 6 in 90 countries.

Apple first announced the Mac App Store in October, and promised a launch within 90 days. The digital download destination will serve as a Mac OS X counterpart to the iOS App Store for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

Apple Limits Vacation Time Ahead of iPad, iPhone News

Apple retail store employees probably shouldn't plan a vacation anytime soon. According to AppleInsider, the company has placed a restriction on vacation days for a three-week period starting at the end of January.
Does this mean that Apple is preparing for a significant round of product updates? For months, there have been reports in publications likeWall Street JournalThe New York Times, and Fortune that have said Apple is preparing to release a Verizon CDMA iPhone in early 2011, however none of these reports have proven true so far.
There are other products that are on track for an update as well, including MacBook Pros and the iPad. The rumor mill has been busy churning out news of a next generation iPad for quite some time now. Reports have said that the iPad 2 would include such features as dual-facing cameras for video chatting, retina display, a larger speaker, and a USB port.
A case and an aluminum prototype for the iPad 2 have been spotted at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES), going on this week in Las Vegas. If it is legitimate, the case, produced by Chinese company Dexim, would confirm the two cameras, larger speaker, and the device's slimmer design.
AppleInsider said that Apple has held onto its "overstaffed holiday personnel at many retail stores" in anticipation of these product launches. The report also said that Apple has been wary of granting vacation time for all of January and into February.
Whether the product update rumors are true remains to been seen. It was initially reported that Apple would break its traditional update cycle of one year and produce a second generation iPad in time for the holidays. However, that time passed and the iPad 2 is still just a figment of shoppers' imaginations.
All of the Verizon iPhone rumors that have reported a specific release date for the CDMA device have been wrong thus far. Although the phone could be coming in the next few months, these rumors have surfaced pretty much monthly and have yet to come true.
Despite Apple's embargo on vacation time, as usual, retail employees are kept in the dark about what products the company is planning and when the launch will be.

Best Western fills a mobile vacancy with a new iPad app

Best Western has found room for another mobile offering. The hotel chain has launched an app forApple Inc.’s iPad that enables users to book reservations at the more than 4,000 Best Western hotels worldwide.
In addition to booking rooms, the iPad app users also can share travel experiences and photos through the app via e-mail, Facebook or Twitter.
The iPad app also enables users to plan their travel by inputting addresses of attractions and restaurants nearby and using a GPS-enabled map  to create itineraries.  Additionally, a trip saver tool allows users to save past trips, including favorite locations visited, or to save the itineraries they create for future trips.
IPad app users also can add pictures and additional information to the app to help them remember and share details about saved locations. They can categorize and sort saved locations by city, trip name and location type for easy future reference. Best Western also took advantage of the larger screen of the iPad to place additional location icons on the map tool than the mobile apps for smaller devices offer. Best Western says this will make it easier for travelers to plan and navigate while on trips.
The iPad app follows the hotel chain’s iPhone and Android apps and its mobile site at BestWestern2Go.com. Best Western launched its first mobile app in 2009 when it unveiled its iPhone app. All mobile apps—grouped under the heading Best Western to Go—as well as the mobile site enable consumers to book rooms at any Best Western hotel worldwide. The hotel chain's mobile site, launched in 2008, was built bu Usablenet. All apps were built by San Diego-based Digitaria.
"Ensuring the iPad Best Western to Go application consistently meets the needs of travelers on the go and is available on the devices they use most is a central part of our efforts to expand brand awareness and grow loyalty," says Dorothy Dowling, senior vice president of marketing and sales for Best Western International.
Best Western says its hotels host 400,000 guests each night.

Apple's Mac OS X hacked to run on Intel's new Sandy Bridge processors

Before Intel formally unveils its next-generation of processors, likely to officially find their way into Apple's line of Macs in the future, hackers have managed to run Apple's Mac OSX on the new Sandy Bridge CPU hardware.

The Consumer Electronics Show this week marks the official introduction of Intel's newly redesigned processors, which are the first to combine visual and 3D graphics technology along with microprocessors on the same chip. The product line, codenamed "Sandy Bridge," features newly architected Intel HD Graphics on each 32nm die for significant performance improvements over previous generation graphics.

While Intel's latest family of chips, featuring a major redesign, will inevitably arrive in future Macs from Apple, hackers this week wasted no time to install Mac OS X on a Sandy Bridge processor. As noted by Engadget, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard was installed onto a "Hackintosh" machine running the Intel Core i5-2500K CPU, with a clock speed of 3.30GHz.

The system, running Snow Leopard, achieved a Geekbench Score of 8874 and an Xbench score of 282.40, boosted in part by 6MB of L3 cache in the Sandy Bridge chip. The feat was achieved by utilizing a patched kernel, and the process was detailed by the blog tonymacx86 after Intel lifted their non-disclosure agreement for those with early access to the new processors.

"Until Apple uses these CPUs, it's a bit of a science experiment, as you'll need to use a 'patched' non-standard Darwin kernel in order to boot the system," the blog reads.

While Intel is prepared to officially unveil its second-generation Core processor family during CES Press Day on Wednesday, the company did issue a press release earlier this week touting some of the features of its newly redesigned line of chips. The chipmaker said more than 500 desktop and laptop PCs are expected from all major computer manufacturers throughout 2011.

"The new 2nd Generation Intel Core processors represent the biggest advance in computing performance and capabilities over any other previous generation," said Mooly Eden, vice president and general manager, PC Client Group, Intel. "The built-in visual capabilities enabled by these new processors are stunning. This combined with improved adaptive performance will revolutionize the PC experience in a way that is obvious for every user to see and appreciate – visibly smarter performance."

New features include Intel Insider, Intel Quick Sync Video, and a new version of the company's award-winning Intel Wireless Display (WiDi), which now adds 1080p HD and content protection for those wishing to beam premium HD content from their laptop screen to their TV. The company also revealed arrangements with CinemaNow, Dixons Retail plc, Hungama Digital Media Entertainment, Image Entertainment, Sonic Solutions, and Warner Bros. Digital Distribution.

In December, a rumor claimed that Apple would release new MacBooks in 2011 that will rely on Intel's Sandy Bridge processor family, which could mean that Nvidia graphics solutions will not be included in at least some models 13 inches and under. It has been suggested that MacBook models with screen sizes 13 inches and under will have Intel Sandy Bridge-only graphics, while Apple's larger, higher-end MacBooks with screen sizes of 15 and 17 inches will allegedly rely on GPUs from AMD.

Starting in 2010 with its Arrandale processors, Intel began building in the major northbridge chipset memory controller components to its chips. The architectural changes in Arrandale, along with a lawsuit, forced Nvidia to halt the development of future chipsets.

How To Capture a Screen Shot on the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch

Did you know you can capture a screen shot from your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch without having to install any third-party ap
How To Capture a Screen Shot on the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch
ps? This allows you create a picture of anything displayed on the screen, no matter which app you have open. You will need iPhone OS firmware version 2.0 or higher for this trick.

To capture a screen shot:
  1. Press and hold the menu button (the main button below the screen).
  2. While the menu button is held down, press the power/lock button (the switch on the top edge of the device).
Note: You can also hold the lock button and press the menu button, or try to press the two buttons simultaneously. Do whatever is easiest, but if you keep both buttons held down too long, you will get the power down confirmation.
Your screen will flash white for a second and make a camera shutter noise (if you have the volume turned up) to indicate that the screen shot has been taken. But where is it?
The screen shots you take are automatically saved in the default Photos app under an album called "Saved Photos" or "Camera Roll" depending on your device. From here you can email one or more screen shots or other pictures, by clicking the menu icon (a rectangle with an arrow coming out of it, in the bottom left corner of the screen). Clicking the menu icon from a single picture will email the one image. If you click the menu button from an index page, you can select multiple pictures to email.

Apple set to open Mac App Store at noon Eastern on Thursday

Apple's much anticipated Mac App Store will open for users of Mac OS X Snow Leopard at noon Eastern time on its previously announced launch date of Thursday, Jan. 6.

Citing sources, Jim Dalrymple of The Loop reported Wednesday that Apple will officially open the service at 12 p.m. Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. When the Mac App Store was rumored to have an early launch in December, he correctly reported that it would not arrive until January 2011.

Apple first announced the Mac App Store in October, and promised a launch within 90 days. The digital download destination will serve as a Mac OS X counterpart to the iOS App Store for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

The App Store will allow users to download and install applications with just one click, like on iOS devices. Developers will also be able to take a 70 percent cut of sales through the digital storefront, while Apple keeps 30 percent.

Like on iOS devices, software will be remotely hosted by Apple. But once applications are installed, they will run locally, like traditional software.

Developers this week have been preparing for the launch of the App Store, and many of them plan to keep the low pricing model that has been employed to great success on the iPhone App Store, according to an informal survey.

In contrast, in its own promotional materials, Apple has shown its iLife applications with a price of $15 each, while iWork apps were shown being sold individually for $20. When combined, those prices are comparable to what customers would pay for the full retail versions of iLife and iWork for Mac.

Apple iPad 2 Rumors Circulate the Web

While almost every technology company in the world descends on Las Vegas this week for the Consumer Electronics Show, one major tech company will be missing: Apple. But even in the absence of Steven Jobs and his iProducts, the technology giant’s intimidating presence will be felt in every corner of the event. This can already be seen in the number of iPad 2 rumors circulating the Web leading up to the show, which officially opens on Thursday.

Several weeks ago, the Japanese blog MacOtakara, citing anonymous sources, said the iPad 2 would look more like the current generation iPod Touch, with a slimmer form and a sleek, curved back. The blog also predicted that the new iPad would have a smaller bezel around its edge and a better speaker system.
AppleInsider, the Mac enthusiast blog, also has previously published reports that the next iPad would have a camera in the front and rear that would enable videoconferencing.
On Wednesday Paul Miller, a writer for Engadget, offered some confirmation for these predictions when he wrote about a new iPad case he saw at the show. It contained a mockup of an iPad. He tried to put his own iPad inside the case, but it wouldn’t fit, he said. Instead, the makers of the case told him that “the case was designed for the next iPad.”
Mr. Miller said that based on what he saw of the case, the new device is smaller and lighter than the original, and also sports the front and rear camera.

Microsoft to take on Apple TV with Windows-based set top box

A new report claims that software giant Microsoft will challenge the Apple TV and Google TV platforms when it introduces a stripped down version of Windows for set top boxes and connected TVs later this year.

Microsoft TV?

The Redmond, Wash., Windows maker is aiming to make further inroads into the connected living room this year, according to a report by the The Seattle Times.

"Microsoft's going to make a splash in this market with a stripped-down version of Windows tailored for set-top boxes and connected TVs," wrote author Brier Dudley. "The software is a version of its embedded device software, overlaid with the Windows Media Center interface, with media streaming and remote-control capabilities."

The Windows-based set top boxes will reportedly go on sale later this year and cost around $200. By comparison, the new streaming Apple TV costs $99.

In November, reports emerged that Microsoft was planning an Xbox-based streaming TV service in hopes of becoming a "virtual cable operator." At the time, sources claimed that Microsoft was at least 12 months away from launching the product.

Google TV

The Seattle Times report comes just days before the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where TV makers are expected to present the next generation of connected TVs.

Several manufacturers, however, may have had their plans delayed. According to The New York Times, HDTV manufacturers hoping to show off televisions running the Google TV software at CES have been asked by Google to hold off.

"Google has asked the TV makers to delay their introductions, according to people familiar with the company's plans, so it can refine the software, which has received a lukewarm reception," the report said. "The late request caught some of the manufacturers off guard."

After initial reviews of Google TV took issue with the platform's inconsistent interface and instability, Google has struggled to gain traction with the product. The Google TV platform has also faced resistance from the major studios, who are wary of Google cannibalizing their ad revenue.

Just a month after releasing a combination Google TV Blu-Ray device, Sony slashed its prices, suggesting that sales of the device were off to a sluggish start.

Apple TV

UBS Investment Research analyst Maynard Um sees Apple as leading the pack in the race for the "global digital living room," though Google and Microsoft have emerged as key players as well. According to Um, Microsoft's success with the Xbox and high Windows market share are the company's strong points, but the software giant lacks integration between products.

Apple is expected by a number of analysts to release an HDTV, possibly with 3D capabilities, within the next couple years.

"While Apple's commitment to the living room remains a 'hobby,' we continue to believe the company will enter the TV market with a full focus, as an all-in-one Apple television could move the needle when connected TVs proliferate," said Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster on Monday.

Just before Christmas, sales of the Apple TV, which began shipping in September, topped 1 million units. Wall Street viewed the milestone as a sign that Apple is positioned to become a "more material contributor and game changer in the TV space." According to Shaw Wu of Kaufman Bros., the addition of an Apple TV App Store would be a major catalyst for Apple's progress into the living room.
